Jim, you made a number of good points, imo, w.r.t. the uncertainties that exist going forward. I'm not sure if we covered this before, but there is a good white paper by The Shosteck Group that puts many of these issues into perspective very nicely, imo. It's titled:

"Lessons from Metricom and Mobilestar: Success Factors for The Portable Internet Access Market"

After a quickie registration, the report is soon emailed to you. It establishes a clear and contrasting set of perspectives by comparing the traditional cellular carriers' (and vendors') approaches [both industry standards and proprieteary ones] to data delivery, and those that will be supported by future wireless IP providers. In the process, the distinctions between portable and mobile, and their underlying infrastructures, become crystal clear. Leastwise, that was my take of the report, fwiw.
