Bond boss to sell MGM to fight child support claim

An American billionaire is being sued for £220,000 a month child support.

Kirk Kerkorian, ranked the 46th richest person in the world, is being told to pay up to care for his three-year-old daughter.

Mr Kerkorian, who holds the exclusive James Bond film rights, is being forced to sell his Hollywood film studio MGM for £4.8 billion.

Kerkorian, 84, who bought MGM from a French bank for £897 million in 1996, is being sued for child support by his ex-wife, former tennis star Lisa Bonder Kerkorian. The 36-year-old former is seeking the biggest child support award ever in California.

Ms Bonder Kerkorian says her former husband promised to take care of Kira's every need including £99,000 for travel, £9,650 for parties and play dates and £300 for care of Kira's bunny and other pets.

In court papers, she said: "In all our discussions the word 'needs' never meant basic needs, but what was required to maintain her in the station of life and with all the things and benefits befitting the daughter of Kirk Kerkorian."

In addition to MGM and four US cable TV channels, Kerkorian is one of the largest shareholders of the DaimlerChrysler car company and owns hotels and casinos in Las Vegas.

The couple met in 1986 and Lisa Kerkorian said she pressed him to marry her, but he refused; she tried to leave in the summer of 1997 but soon found she was pregnant, according to the court documents.

Kerkorian agreed to marry Lisa in 1999, 17 months after Kira was born, on the condition that she filed for divorce a month later and that she waive her right to spousal support, the documents say.

Kerkorian agreed to pay £34,500 a month in child support, and for a time upped that to £52,000 a month. But Lisa Kerkorian contends that is not enough for Kira, whose first birthday party cost £48,300 and who has flown more than 35 times on private jets.
