Russian, Brasilian Presidents Agree on Military Cooperation

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his visiting Brasilian counterpart, Fernando Henrique Cardoso met today in the Kremlin and signed number of co-operation agreements, including a memorandum on military-technical co-operation.

Russia had been negotiating the sale of 24 Su-35 fighter-jets to Brasil. France was also holding negotiations on the subject with Brasil. However, Russia has proposed to sell not only the planes, but also the necessary technological base for their production.

Cardoso arrived in Moscow yesterday night and is expected to leave for Ukraine on Wednesday.

Putin and Cardoso today considered the strengthening of political ties between the two countries, as well as trade and economic, scientific and technical co-operation.

Besides the military co-operation memorandum, they signed a number of other important documents.

In a joint document issued at the end of the talks, Russia said it considers Brasil a suitable candidate for the United Nations' Security Council. In turn, Brasil said it supports Russia's effort to become a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
