Caxton,

Correct me if I am wrong, but as far as I know, no wireless carrier is profitable yet.

Next, what do you prefer to limit this argument to, Europe or the US? CDMA2000/1xrTT is a moot point in Europe, however in the good olde US, we are "standard independet". Therefore, instead of Code Division Multiple Access, one could implement a Caxton Division Multiple Access, or even a Caxton/Dave Division Multiple Access (CDDMA).

Cingular, AT&T Wireless, Voice Stream have all chosen the W-CDMA(UMTS) route. I don't have the reason, and neither do you. Here's some speculation:

(1) That all three companies are petulant and jealous of Qualcomm.
(2) That these companies are betting on the economies of scale, therefore hoping that WCDMA infrastructure will be cheaper than CDMA2000/1xrTT.

I could only think of two. I see no rush for carriers to implement 3G services, I've stated that in the past. Cell phones are still predominantly used to place calls only.

Better than not having any spectrum in the back of the seat, the trunk filled of whoever sits on it.
