Bill, isn't that just another form of faith? Like religious faith? The difference is that its a faith [in statistics] where you feel more comfortable.

An operating assumption that the max rate of travel is 1/100C gives quite a time difference in galaxy travel if we can travel at 100 times the speed of light. that 10,000 factor brings it into the real of doable in a few hundred years.

And some future technology may make it possible. But its clear that humanity has a great deal of faith in its ability to succeed technologically.

I expect that is why science fiction uses 'warp drives' and mechanisms to avoid inordinately long travel times.

I personally believe that we talk about warp drives etc to prepare us for what will be true in the future. Its like setting up the goal and then achieving it over time.
