I don't know what the consensus estimate was, but some thought it would be the same or higher then for 2001. I agree with you and Tony, though. A 30-40% decrease should have been expected, instead.

I don't think Intel ever came out and said it, but the number $5.5B for capex 2002 was actually mentioned quite a bit until a few weeks ago, when some analysts started talking it up. First it was 6 - 6.5, then it got as high as 7B the last few days. To repeat, it was the analysts that talked it up. Andy Bryant has refused to answer the Capex 2002 question every time he's spoken in the last month or so.
