*Seriously OT-book lovers only* Some of you may remember that I have a friend who is publishing his first book (first mentioned in a post last July)....

Well, the response is truly stunning so far. He's just had (last Friday) a full page article in USA Today- Life section. He is drawing standing-room only crowds at his appearances at bookstores around the country, and the Barnes and Noble in Chicago said they've never had an appearing author sell out their allotment that day (He's the 1st). He is scheduled to go on the Today Show on the 24th, the Tonight Show later, and his reps are talking to Oprah Winfrey (the motherload in more ways than one!)- since he is African-American, originally from Chicago, and has a helluva funny/interesting book, and is already in major media ...he's got a real shot...

The book: Plane Insanity by Elliott Hester (funny, raunchy, and scary stories that happen in an airplane- told from a flight attendent's perspective)

My friend is/was a flight attendent for 14 years...and is a straight man in a largely gay man field (which, of course, adds/creates some of the stories as well).

Believe it or not, his book was to be originally published/promoted starting September 17, but September 11th changed everything (at the time, they thought about postponing the book for a year). In a weird twist, now his themes are more in demand than ever (although pre-Sept. 11, this stuff was pretty popular still).

I remember the day well 2 years ago when he and I sat together in his small appartment, and he took 2 hours of my time reciting his idea to me.....at the end of it, I told him, "Elliott, you've got to do this. It all adds up. I think you'll get a book deal". (He had some connections already, since he had been a travel writer for 5 years now)And the next day, the guy started writing, and he continued to bust his ass and sacrificed, and got a book deal w/St. Martins in December '00. It is their #1 promoted hardcover for this next season.

I bring all this up (sorry if this has bored anyone) just to remind everyone of the power of dreams and ideas, and that so much is possible in life if you are willing to go for it, while also willing to plan and sweat to make it happen. My friend is living proof and a great reminder.

Good luck to all you dreamers, whatever your dreams may be....
