Singapore shares open higher as blue chips rebound

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Singapore shares started firmer on Wednesday as Wall Street's gains triggered a recovery in blue chips like Singapore Press Holdings after sharp losses in the previous day.

At 0135 GMT, the bellwether Straits Times Index was up 0.54 percent or 9.21 points at 1,703.69. It had fallen 2.14 percent on Tuesday.

Gainers beat losers 68 to 34 in the broader market in brisk volume of 168 million shares.

Singapore Press (SPH) was up 2.19 percent at S$23.30 after tumbling 6.17 percent in the previous day. It is up 6.9 percent in 2002.

Singapore Airlines climbed 2.42 percent to S$12.70 after losing 6.8 percent over the past three days.

MFS Technology debuted at a premium and was quoting at S$0.30 in heavy volume of 24 million shares. The printed circuits maker had offered shares at S$0.27 in its initial public offering.

Balance out this rosy LT IT scenario against Goldman Sachs' IT spending survey which shows deteriorating month to month IT spend expectations by purchasing managers. In Dec 60% expected flat to down '02 spend v. 55% in Nov. 50% expect IT spend wont return to normal until 2003.
