Because everyone else saw it. A lot of people here saw it. It's not like Intel comes out of the blue with these things. They release roadmaps well in advance of product.
Any chip designer could figure out how far a 20 stage pipe would scale.

I think what AMD really blew was the "MHz sells" axiom. They thought that somehow everyone would just figure out that the Athlon was much faster in IPC and simply ignore the raw Mhz. Actually this is typical of those that know too much, like Engineers. They figure everyone should know it.

So AMD waits until they get caught with their pants down and then comes up with quantispeed which is what they should have done 6 months earlier. Not after they had been bit*hslapped by Intel and their own delays.

Meanwhile Jerry dumps stock and buys a chair with shareholders money.
