U.S. tech spending may return in 2002-Fed's Guynn

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Jan 16 (Reuters) - Spending on technology in the United States may come back as soon as this year, Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta Jack Guynn said on Wednesday.

Guynn said technology spending, which dropped off in 2001, may return, ``even this year.'' But he told members of the Birmingham Rotary Club that he did not expect it to go back to the ``frenzied'' pace seen at the end of the last decade.

Guynn's comments on tech spending came in a question-and-answer session. His formal remarks were a repeat of a speech he delivered last week. In the speech he said it was too early to declare an end to the U.S. recession and said growth in the second half of the year will be around 3 percent at an annualized rate.
