neo, the arguments I gave explain why many do think that it is a big deal. To the individuals involved who were the heroes it is personal and important. Their feelings matter. Individuals feelings matter. That is why there is a controversy.

I cannot fathom why anyone would have not understood being an American 101 and made such a politically correct decision. It was a stupid decision the would create division. These men who were on the front lines have witnessed the deaths of their comrades and those with half a brain would have realized this.

I understand your argument about the symbology and it does not matter. It is an issue of balance and in this case the feeling of individuals and their perception of symbology should rule.

As for symbolism. Regarding the famous Iwo Jima photo, was it in the heat of battle or was it reenacted or even staged by the American press corp? Using the same reasoning one could question the circumstances of the photo of the Firemen. Hope no one takes offense at this question.
