Hi cosmic,

Mark Twain is also one of my favorite authors that I have read the least of... I have read more about him, than BY him.. Read in my youth, Huck and Tom S, some of Roughing It and a true account of some of his travels in Hawaii.. Bought that one of our trips over there because I like to get the earliest account (by white man's standards because that is the only language I can read..gg) I can of places I visit...

Anyway, I like Twain, because he was a iconoclast that appealed to the masses, recognized the social injustices, and spoke out about them.... A social liberal, a fiscal conservative and one Helluva family man and father, that loved to have a GOOD TIME.. I have those values, if I understand HIS correctly..

I got turned on to him again, the last two nights on PBS when they had his biography.. I don't know if that was nation-wide, rerun or what.. New to me though..

I think Huck Finn might be one of those books that transcend time and age, if that is different..g. I don't know.. Anyway, a person can read it at a young age for the fanciful adventure and later in life for the deeper social implications.. So after getting re-acquainted the last two nights, we are planning on checking out "Huck Finn" and "Puddinhead Wilson"..

I especially liked the quote from Huck, after he wrote the letter to turn in Jim and then reconsidered, tore it up and said.. "I rather go to Hell".. meaning if he went against common, accepted thought, (defined by main-line religion and social norms) He was TAUGHT to think, He would go to Hell.. But he didn't, I'm sure.. So IMO,

Deeper morality trumps accepted thought and action of the Time.. Morality transcends time..Accepted social norms do not..If people could only recognize the difference in real time.

I wonder if W would have have shook his hand today, Teddy R. wouldn't then..There are some similarities between the two presidents..But, of course, I don't know..

Take care ..
