I upgrade my PCs based on Megahertz - ie when new PC becomes available that is at least 2x, and maybe 3x fatser, it is usually time to upgrade. If one does not care about speed then they are only reading text email I would think.

As to Altivec - the P4 has SSE2, so that is no longer a real advantage.

when AMD started doing that it smelled funny

AMD and Apple are in entirely different businesses. I do not know a single person who buys a computer because of the CPU. Not a single one.

And if the thing is a digital hub then why on earth should they? It should matter as much for an iMac as it does for a DVD player, a DV camcorder, a digicam, etc etc etc. That information is totally irrelevant.

Either the device does what you want it to do, or it doesn't.
