I do not think we kill them because they are our enemy. As I said, the modern rules of war mandate humane treatment of captured soldiers, for example. We kill them because we think it will stop the carnage faster and ultimately conserve human life. We kill them when we think that the regime is impervious to normal pressures, and will continue "fighting to the last man", and, ultimately, as the fighting rages and the economy and infrastructure degrades, will take many civilians with them anyway......

True.

But rationalization works on both sides of the coin.

Some people can rationalize their opposition to dropping the bomb by claiming that the Japanese were about to surrender anyhow, when that, IMO, is a highly dubious assumption.
