The key point is that CLOCK FOR CLOCK, a G4 is faster than an P4, and it's ESPECIALLY faster for those tasks that need to be fast.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. Do you mean that a 400Mhz G3 is fater than a 400Mhz P4? If so I agree.

If you mean to say that a 800Mhz G4 is faster than a 2.0Ghz P4 then I disagree.

Again that's disputed by January DV which compared several Wintel machines to the fastest Mac available, I believe the 800 dual machine. PC's beat it in virtually every category no problem, and trounced it in several. And these are the very processes where Macs need to be fast.

As I said earlier Macs used to beat PC's due to superior FPU in rendering but that's no longer the case. That was when you could buy a 150Mhz PPC and a 200Mhz Pentium. Not too different in raw Mhz. But when it's double or soon triple you begin to have problems. And if you interpolate down the road it could get to quadruple or worse. That's bad, because there may have been a lul in software demands on processors but that lul is temporary, the demands we will place on computers will continue to rise. Even if it doesn't the speeds argue that Intel could cut costs on slower processors dramatically.

Just pointing out that the ARGUMENT that Macs are faster is NO LONGER ANY INCENTIVE AT ALL for Windows users or for first time computer buyers to buy a Mac. Software is really the only concrete advantage Macs have, with better design coming in a distant second.

They are whittling us down. It's likely to get worse. That's why I've always argued that OS X is the hope and they will eventually port it.
