Of these, less than one-tenth attributed the cause to military defeats, one-quarter attributed the cause to shortages of food and civilian supplies, the largest part to air attack." The bombing of the railroads which was set to begin would have put the finishing touches on the food shortage as it would have isolated the cities from any supply. A person can avoid starvation for quite a while with a meal every 3 or four days...but it is not a lot of fun...
