Yes, not many leaders managed to create a state with a single military and a single chain of command that remained subordinate to a democratically elected civilian leadership. While surrounded by enemies and absorbing over 800,000 refugees, most of them destitute.

One thing that amazes me about Israel is that somehow, against all odds it has survived so far.

Against what odds? Israel has always had a lot more money, ammo, and international backing.
