The kids are learning to think and to question, and to respect that commonality you speak of. They are no longer impressed by bluster or by empty appeals to "patriotism" as an argument. They understand how tiny is the globe, and that people must learn to live shoulder to shoulder. Whether they are conservative or liberal, they recognize the right to an opinion, and the benefits of tolerance and respect. They are able to study the past without the fetters of prejudice; and they are able to learn from history...and to apply her lessons to the present, as well as to the future. Of course, they have no reasonable choice: the consequences of ignorance are far-reaching.
