In any case, the lowest close for December last has been taken out. Not a strong start out of the gate for 2002.

But as you and I and maybe the rest of the one percent of the investing public know, there's just not the value there.

I have an ancient book titled "Investment and Speculation" sitting at my elbow that was published in 1911. Inside, as a bookmark, is part of a bill dated 1921. It's bound in leather. I think I got it at a flea market about ten years ago along with some other arcahic books. Reprints (not the originals) are offered to brokers at prices ranging up to $200 for their professional libraries. I got the genuine antiques for a dollar or two each.

(The author is Thomas Conway, Jr.)

Anyway, going back almost a century, there are plenty of observations that apply today. Value counts in the long run--and even not all that long a run. And the value is not there in our markets right now, on the whole.
