Gallup Poll: Enrongate Not Working for Dems
Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002 10:45 a.m. EST

Democrats hoping that two weeks of media hysteria over the Enron scandal would put a dent in President Bush's sky-high approval ratings got some disappointing news Wednesday morning, when a just-released Gallup poll showed the scandal had laid a political goose egg.

"Evidence that the Enron controversy is not tainting the Bush administration comes from President Bush’s job approval rating -- holding in the mid-80s," says Gallup.

"Overall, 83 percent of all Americans approve of the job George W. Bush is doing as president, down only slightly from 84 percent a week ago and 86 percent in December. Bush’s approval rating among those closely following the Enron story is only slightly lower than it is among those not following the story -- 79 percent vs. 87 percent."

Even the energy giant itself hasn't fared all that badly, reports Gallup, with a full 60 percent of those surveyed saying they don't believe company executives did anything illegal.

And despite the prediction from ABC newsman Sam Donaldson Friday that Enrongate would "dwarf" both the Whitewater and Monica Lewinsky scandals, Americans are paying what pollsters described as "scant" attention to the energy company imbroglio.

Gallup surveyed 1,008 randomly selected adults between Jan. 11 and 14. The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percent.
