Compaq Earns Fall on Weak Tech Spending

dailynews.yahoo.com

By Caroline Humer

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Compaq Computer Corp. (NYSE:CPQ - news), the country's No. 2 personal computer maker, on Wednesday said fourth-quarter operating earnings fell sharply, but Wall Street took heart in a late-year sales boost and an improved outlook.

Houston-based Compaq closed out a year marked by quarter after quarter of earnings disappointments by topping Wall Street estimates and calling for a recovery in technology spending during the second half of 2002.

Compaq shares rose to $11.40 in after-hours trade on Instinet from the close of $11.17. The results came after the close of trade on the New York Stock Exchange (news - web sites).

Compaq -- which plans to merge with competitor Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE:HWP - news) -- said it earned 6 cents per share in the fourth quarter, before a $36 million charge for merger-related expenses. That is down from 30 cents per share in the year-ago period, which excluded a $1.8 billion write-down on an equity investment.

I can get a better estimate of maxpain (now ~ 45) merely by eyeballing the open interest table at Dreyfus and looking at the distribution. I find the CBOE site redundant and difficult to use because it spills over more than one page.

Those 40 and 42.5 strike option positions are rapidly being closed out leaving a lovely bounty for the pros if they can move AMAT up to the juicy 45 strike by tomorrow afternoon.
