So then either the iMac isn't overpriced, or the IBM is. ...What I believe all these comparisons prove is that the new iMac is priced competitively.

I was thinking precisely about this earlier in the morning. Even an iMac that is not $300 more expensive than a comparable PC would be remarkable, as Macs have always been priced at a premium.

Could it be --I thought-- that Apple has at long last decided to price their computers competitively with the PC world? That would be big news if it were the case.

Alternatively, could I've been looking at the wrong configuration? So I fired up the Dell web site. Selected a Dimension 4300S 1.4GHz Pentium 4, 1 year warranty, Microsoft Works, no printer, 256 SDRAM, 80GB hard drive, 3.5 floppy drive, dell enhanced quiet keyboard, ms intellimouse, Windows XP home edition, no antivirus, flat panel 15", 32MB ati rage, CD-RW/DVD, Integrated audio, Harman Kardon Speakers, Dell Jukebox, Image Expert@2000 digital imaging software, 56K PCI fax modem, 10/100 PCI fast ethernet, 6 months dellnet internet access.

The price? $1380 after rebate.

Then I replaced the CD-RW/DVD with a plain CD-ROM and added a third party DVD-RAM/DVD-R.

The price? $1231+300=$1531 after rebate.

The conclusion is that the hardware is $170 cheaper than a comparable iMac, and if you could find a manufacturer that would ship the DVD-RAM standard, you could get the whole thing for about $1490.
