8:32AM Economic Data : Housing Starts fell 3.4% to a 1.570 mln unit rate in December, a bit weaker than the consensus of 1.610 mln, but Building Permits rose 3.6% to 1.653 mln which was better than the 1.560 mln consensus, so this report is a mixed bag and will not change the view that the housing market remains healthy. Jobless claims fell 14K to 384K in the Jan 12 week, much lower than the 438K consensus and continuing to indicate that the pace of layoffs has fallen off quite a bit. These two reports are mixed, but offer mostly good news for the economy and the market.

11:50 ET Semi Equipment Sector : Semiconductor equipment sector rolled over soon after the open, extending yesterday's losses caused by the Intel cut in capex guidance. This morning's weakness is being attributed to dismal results from Kulicke & Soffa (KLIC -9.6%) and reports that co's conference call also disappointed. We are hearing that Goldman Sachs is advising to avoid buying the dips, as firm continues to anticipate negative news during earnings season.
