till looking for the Berman book you linked. Not a favorite of Bergen County libraries. I read the pages in the Amazon link and found that little bit fascinating.

you might be interested in her second book as well, then, which is currently in progress. Basically, she thinks the early Swedish Social Democrats represent the Second Coming, because they combined very nice lefty policy positions with suberb political skill. The combination allowed them to get elected into power in the first place and then use that position to transform their society and achieve an unprecedented multi-decade democratic political hegemony. Properly understood, she argues, their experiences offer a model for sensible progressives everywhere. The first book compares them favorably to their German contemporaries, who dropped the ball and allowed Hitler to come to power, while the second book traces the history of their movement and explains how it can serve as a model for progressives today. An overview is on her website if you're interested:

>>Not a favorite of Bergen County libraries<<

If your library does interlibrary loans (I think they all do) they can get it for you from another library. It's a way cool service.
