Prosperity is more widespread than it was 50 years ago; the Cold War is over, and more countries are democratic or quasi- democratic than they were 20 years ago; racial antagonism is much less than it was 20 years ago; pollution is reduced in the industrial world (which is why we waste our times over the spotted owl); medical advances have improved longevity and quality of life in the more developed countries; well, I won't go on, in my 40 something years, we seem to have actually improved on many scores, certainly enough to make a categorical statement that things are worse seem.......ill- founded..........
