Intel's third generation IA-64 CPU, Madison, the first one to be designed on a 0.13 micron copper process, is within one or two weeks of tape-out.

That's great news Paul!!!

AMD's statement that Hammer silicon was imminent says to me that they're trying to tapeout but they're having layout problems. Otherwise AMD would have simply said hammer taped out and it's in fab.

Paul, <Intel's third generation IA-64 CPU, Madison>

To be sure, Madison is still a 2nd-generation IA-64 CPU, in my view.

And besides, all Madison does is increase the clock frequency by 60% and the cache by 100%. Who cares about that? ;-)

Paul, great. That's the one on the roadmap that Compaq mentioned as really turning the tables in their switch away from Alpha. Of course, they liked how McKinley jumps performance over Merced, and they like the ones after Madison a lot also. It was the complete roadmap picture that sold Itanium to them.
