At GMU they do all three semester hours in one evening a week, with a ten minute break half way through.

Perfect for seminars. I loved evening three hour seminars; taught one each semester for twenty years. You have plenty of time to let points develop, for lengthy examination of some student's arcane point, and still time to get the main points of some assignment across.
