Nadine... The British were/are our allies too...

But Winston Churchill knew the Japanese were on their way to attack Pearl Harbor...

Again... I'm not questioning the fact that US-Israeli relations have grown substantially closer since 1967, but we're friends so long as our interests coincide and our people share similar commonalities. It's not quite "marriage", but there are similarities.

But Israel also spies on the US (human spies, not just picking up electronic signals). That's why Jonathan Pollard is still rotting in a US jail.

a) what motive the Israelis would have had to sink the Liberty on purpose (it must have been a large one), and b) why everybody keeps bringing it up now.

Motives for the first have been laid out (non-allied with us, they feared we provided Egypt intelligence about them). Why folks bring it up now is most likely because they're just finding out about it and wish to discuss it, or to make the point that Israel has done some rotten stuff.

And those who make the latter point may do so with no ulterior motive, or because they enjoy any opportunity to make Israel look bad.

But that last possibility does not seem to represent the motives of most posters on the subject in this forum.
