UMC to Sell Chipmaking Equipment to China Via Japan, Paper Says
By Iain Pocock

Taipei, Jan. 18 (Bloomberg) -- United Microelectronics Corp. plans to sell chipmaking equipment to China through a Japan unit, the Economic Daily News said, without citing anyone.

The second-largest made-to-order chipmaker will send equipment to Nippon Foundry Inc., its plant in Japan, which will then re-export it to China for sale, the newspaper said. Taiwan bans the island's chipmakers from direct investment in China.

UMC plans to sell about a third of its equipment as part of its attempt to return to profit. On Wednesday, the chipmaker said it planned to sell half the targeted amount by the end of March.
