I always wondered why Jesus didn't give some kind of public statement when (if) he rose. Instead, after a private meeting he went off to the remote reaches of Israel. It just doesn't fit with the story, why the build up with no punch line?

You can go and visit the empty tomb anytime you like. I doubt that chariots would be preserved under water for so long.
