You simply cannot extrapolate from an arbitrarily selected population, the characteristics of an arbitrary but complimentary unselected one, logicwise, without having the total population as a given constant, if ya catch my drift. And, contrapositively speaking, you can not predict the total population, from the same data, either.

Even if you are a scientist. :))

And might I just add, after re-reviewing you post, that standard deviation theory does not apply to a non random population.
