AMD cleverly withheld a huge chunk of the 1500 and 1600 processors (processors which customers were willing to buy for > $100) just to skew the distribution curve, and to hide the fact that majority of the chips were below 1500. Makes a sense - NOT.

Bingo, no more calls we have a winner!!!

But not to skew the distribution curve.

First, remember that Jerry said AMD had high yields. Yield is measured in functional processors. But the capacity is approximately 11MM cpus, yet they only sold 4MM.

Despite Paul's accusations, Jerry is not going to lie when he is disseminating material information to investors. He has been in this business a lot of years, and he knows the rules.

My suggestion is by far and away the best way to rationalize the facts as we have them.

Again, you cannot use standard deviation to predict a non random population, BUT it is hypothetically possible that you are correct and the mean is ~1400. And that the DEMAND is for 2000, 1900 and 1800's and falls off rapidly for 1500, 1600's* and that if, AMD were not ARBITRATILY restricting the 15 and 1600's they would cannibalize the higher speeds with the same revenue, but at reduced ASPs.

This would also explain Jerry's statement that AMD was not demand constrained, but supply constrained. He was not specific as to which speeds.

*This would make sense if it is assumed that if price and speed were equal, the consumer would opt for intel, but I'm just noodling here.

Gee, I wonder if those slower parts had been scheduled to go it Xbox's???? HMMMMMM. Zee plot, she theeeeeekins.
