Dale, SmartMedia is razor thin and doesn't contain...

...an on-board controller. Thus, right speed is determined largely by the device in which it is used. Olympus and Fuji digital camera manufacturers still using SmartMedia. Only SmartMedia fits into a SmartMedia slot.

Compact Flash cards are more substantial and offer higher capacity. The CF card has an on-board controller which determines write speeds which are typically 700kb to 1.5 MB per second for cards destined for the consumer market. Only CF cards fit in CF slots.
