I guess I have found over the past year that I do about as well by absorbing a general feel for the market by reading a lot of posts on a lot of threads from SI, plus, of course, some of the financial publications and some of the TV shows. The whole experience, for me, is like learning to drive in Mexico City--you keep your mind on not getting killed. And you don't worry too much about any "rules." I guess I should have gone back to shorting the QQQs last December, which seems to work extremely well (for me, anyway) when the markets are puffed up and jittery.

But watching the VIX ended up costing me money (closing out puts on the Dow too soon, re-entering too soon). I did OK but would have done better to rely on a general feel.
