There are lots of apps with performance issues, but I would like to give you one example to illustrate it.

If you look in the support forums for Interbase, you'll find out the following solutions provided for XP users:

- IB 6.5 is certified for XP and uses Winsock 2. Winsock 1, used by IB 6.0, seems to have performance issues on XP. Therefore, you'll probably want to upgrade to IB 6.5 if you switch to Windows XP.
- Both IB 6.0 and 6.5 require that System Restore be disabled on the volume which contains IB and your DB.

So, Interbase is plug & play installation on Windows 95, 98, NT3.51, NT4, Windows 2000, but not on Windows Me and XP. These require extra maintenance, increasing TCO.

There are many more examples. Either you were lucky or only use MSFT software.
