Huh? You're putting words in my mouth. Our engagement in the Middle East, part of which is stuff in Saudi Arabia, has the effect of protecting Israel, but that is not the primary objective of it. Nor did I ever say it was.

You said the US was going to disengage from the Middle East because we wouldn't endanger ourselves for Israel:

We're disengaging because it will increase the level of peace, prosperity and security in the United States...our foreign policy must take into account our domestic safety from terrorism. That means that we will be forced to disengage. Why should the American public take a bullet for Israel?

I was pointing out that we have other reasons to stay very much engaged in the Middle East, such as our oil supply. Would it increase our security if Al Quaeda topples the House of Saud and takes the oil fields? How will we prevent this if we have disengaged?

Fanatics tend to be rather optimistic and separate themselves from reality very easily

Yes. Al Quaeda is run by a bunch of fanatics, have you noticed? People who will readily believe that little speech I made up. People who are very dangerous to us, or have you already forgotten 9/11?

The Islamists play on the instincts and impulses of the Arab mind, and judging by the Arab press, they have many sympathizers. You may choose to ignore the Arab and and pretend the MEMRI is making it all up, but it doesn't alter what they have said, what they continue to say, and what they have taught the people to believe.

I asked my husband, who is the conservative version of Joe Six Pack, what he thought about us pulling out of Saudi Arabia, and his reaction was "hasta la vista, baby. Next time Saddam comes knocking at your door, you take care of it, f*heads. And, by the way, we'll be perfectly happy to buy oil from Russia, too."

Now he's back, paraphrasing Bismarck - "Saudi Arabia is not worth the life of one American grenadier."

His great-something uncle was Emory Upton, who taught at West Point, and has a building named after him at Carlisle Military School. Stephen Ambrose wrote a book about Great Uncle Emory, most of which was probably not plagiarized.-g-

I don't think very many people in the USA are worried about saving face with OBL. LOL!
