No because the WHOLE world expected Athlon to be a flop, and it was FAR from that. It's so good it can compete with Intels 130nm NW that has 512KB L2 cache.

I'm not skeptical at all. AMD has delivered time and time again for over 2 years.

Re: then all the CPU designers at AMD deserve one hell of a promotion, because they will have not only managed to outpace Intel, but also the rest of the entire CPU industry

The team that designs CPUs for AMD previously designed the Alpha, which not only managed to outpace Intel, but also the rest of the industry.

Athlon was a quick hack, needed to save the company, and is as fast as 129mm2 of .18 silicon as is P4 using 145mm2 of .13 silicon.

With hammer, Dirk and company are taking their time, and designing for .13 SOI.

It would be quite a shock if it didn't outpace Intel, as well as the rest of the industry.
