This is the part that the Chinese President reallllly didn't like:

The discovery came ahead of a planned summit between President Bush and Jiang in Beijing next month. The Chinese president was said to be furious about the find, the FT said.

The aircraft was made at the Boeing factory in Seattle and then fitted with VIP equipment and upholstery by another company. The plane was under surveillance by Chinese officials throughout, the newspaper said.

Edit: speaking of grubs....grub.

Down to get the friction on again with American-Sino relations....?

Chinese presidential jet bugged

But I'm frankly dubious, anyone else around here who knows a bit about contemporary communications systems who is ready to swallow this:

"The bugs, hidden in upholstery, were detected after the aircraft emitted a strange static whine during test flights in China in September, shortly after it was delivered. They were said to be tiny and operated by satellite"

Oooh! Operated by satellite no less!!

Something fun developing here ...

It's in Saturday's Washington Post, too...

China Finds Bugs on Jet Refitted in U.S.
washingtonpost.com

Remember all the recent American indignation about China spying on the US? Of course we would never spy on China!

I wonder what the bug planters expected to hear from the Chinese president's bed? It seems that we used to look for communists under every bed, and now we are looking for them in the beds! The late-night comedians should have some fun with this. <g>
