Milo - You wrote Do you really believe that Intel's doing a better than average job for the amount of money spent on Itanic and P4 development?

Well, for starters - Intel is profitable - AMD isn't.
Second, Intel's "Itanic" investment has produced shippable, working products and according to Intel, their second generation product - Mckinley - is now shipping.
AMD's 64 bit effort has produced nothing but a few slides.
As for Pentium 4, it sure beats the AMD Athlon - in speed, performance, sales and mindshare.

Doesn't it bother you that AMD's investments have resulted in two - and most likely three - straight quarterly losses?
Monica

AMD is value engineering and they are making INTC look bad on every x86-32 front on a R&D basis.

How, by being late, not by weeks, but by quarters in every one of their x86-32 releases in the last year? Intel's x86-32 products lateness, OTOH, has been in weeks or not at all. It doesn't matter how good the design is if you can't push it push it out the door. AMD's huge loss in Q3 is a great example

Milo, Re: "I knew you'd answer me with a Insult. You always do with the truth surfaces."

Cut the crap, Milo. I was having a productive conversation with you until you tried changing the subject, and bringing up non-related issues. Usually when the truth surfaces, you are the one with fingers in your ears shouting "la la la la la" (tm Dan3).

Intel has spent a lot more on researching their architectures. AMD has done much more with less. I wouldn't necessarily downplay Intel with that, since much of the rest of the industry has shown countless times that more money doesn't necessarily create a better product. Rather, it's a complement to the AMD engineers, lead mostly by an experienced few that had a great vision, and were successful with making a product out of it. If it weren't for the mistakes of AMD management (most notably the notorious revenge tactics of their CEO), and the incompetence of their marketing teams (most notably being late to the game in creating a credible metric for performance, and also the creation of model numbers, which has more inherent faults in it that will hurt AMD later on), then AMD may have been sitting quite ahead of the industry with leading products and a towering stock price. Unfortunately, like any other company, AMD has problems of their own, especially considering that their corporate culture is built primarily off the ego of a man who will be retiring shortly. Not even the best products in the world can save them from themselves. Of course, Intel has problems, too, and maybe these will cancel out any possible advantages on either side. In a fiercely competitive world like this, you have to expect some successes and some failures. Since you are an AMDroid, I fully expect you to continue gloating over the successes of AMD, while simultaneously gloating over the failures of Intel. That's what you do. And you will continue to do it whether or not AMD comes out ahead.
