>> the world is never going to be a peaceful place

I have agree with that.

But on another subject. I saw signs all over town today saying Service Merchandise is having their final going out of business sale. I thought you might want to know, in case you didn't already. They have paper signs at all the major intersections. As though it was a big block party or something.

I think it is sometimes hard to be honest with oneself. I spend a significant part of my time in Asia, where 'face saving' is the name of the game. It is healthy to the extent that it keeps people from making others feel bad just for sport and it can be considered a form of 'respectful behavior' or politeness. Unfortunately it can and often is a means to mislead others and avoid taking responsibility for oneself. The results can be and have been very destructive in many countries. Our strength is in being honest even if we are not always so polite -- although we could stand to do better on being polite. We lost that strength in the bubble, where gross distortions of the truth became 'the norm'. This brutal bear market is the price we are paying for that mistake. We will not emerge from this as a strong economy or nation until honesty is once again the norm.
