What do you think the peoples' response would be to the question is it better to spend billions on star wars or on SS and Medicare because the economy can only sustain one or the other? The fundamental difference here is that with SS & MC you're spending on CONSUMPTION, whereas SDI is a capital investment. Even I would be supportive of MC & SS were they engineered in such as way as to be actuarually sound. But the way the programs were designed they are nothing more than giant ponzi schemes. "Peoples'" response simply isn't important. They do not understand the issues well enough to make an intelligent choice. The simple fact is that SS has to go or be totally re-engineered from the ground up.
