This undermines the credibility of the whole system -- and that is a very damaging perception. I think a clean-up is long overdue. I also think that the concept of valuation is part of the return to a more 'honest' assessment of stock prices. I truley believe a return to GAAP would be really helpful. This may have to be a forced return by the SEC but it is a true picture. People will have to adjust their valuations accordingly. One simple item so often ignored now. Taxes on stock options are a real expense.
