Actually, Nadine, the Muslims of the last millennium were no better than the Spanish Inquisition (the Inquisition imitated them rather than the other way around). If you know of the Rambam, his running out from place to place, were partially forced due to Christian pressure first (in provincial France), and then Islamic conversion pressure (in North Africa, Fez, where his mentor chose to die, rather than convert). Finally in Egypt, because of his medical gift, he was, allowed to practice his religion, he became so important to the Califate, that later on, when the Yemenite Jewry was under religious Islamic persecution and waves of forced conversion, he got the Califate to intervene and relax the Yemenite proselytizing drive.
