Seals, Delta Force, Rangers are Special Operations Forces that operate under Special Operations Command which unifies their missions. SOG (kind of a forerunner) is Special Operations Group, whose designation is/was a deadhead with a beret and a lightning bolt during Vietnam.

Many of these special operations forces train with each other and even with the German and British Special Forces. The trend today is to use them in coordination and not to specifically operate under their branch of service, hence although they have some rivalries they tend to think of the whole as Special Forces and even the military seems to put out the news of their deployment that way without designating their specific branch. Haiti showed them that communications (groups had different radios) were critical and some SEALS were lost there. Panama had some of the same problems. British SAS in Iraq had radios whose frequencies did not work in the area where they operated (an anomoly) and were unable to signal for ex-fil. Luckily they were able to at least signal through tacbees to jets overhead that they had been compromised and alert their command to this fact.
