The only reason that the incumbent has an "advantage" is because the voters
let it be an advantage.

It is not quite that simple. The incumbent has the advantage of name recognition which
unfortunately can effect the outcome of an election. S/he also has a financial advantage
because statistics show that incumbents win more than 50% of the time, therefore, those
contributing campaign funds give the greater amount to the person already holding the office.
