I don't think Steve would let AOL buy Apple at this time. What would he get out of it? Apple is his great experiment, and it's poised for a possible great comeback with OSX. If Steve dreams of anything he dreams of Apple making an amazing turnaround kicking Windows collective butt. It's possible. He doesn't need much more to do it. Some OSX tweeks and a processor breakthrough.

Linux, is in trouble IMHO. It's never been able to make the jump from servers to the desktop because good GUI people just don't work on it for free like programmers will. A lot of good GUI people are not programmers*. And that will probably never change. Meanwhile Macs now have OSX with free BSD underneath. OSX is not going to go away.

If you were writing software which platform would you port the software to? I'd say OSX first and then if I got the chance over to Windows and then (fat chance) maybe Linux. Linux is kind of dead in the water as a desktop.

*Off Topic:
I've been looking for a job in the GUI area. (I'm really pretty good at spotting dumb GUI mistakes.) The requirements that businesses want are really ridiculous. Like: Gui design expertise, Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Java, C++, Hardware design experience. It's kind of funny to watch them search in vain for someone with these qualifications. Kind of like finding a golden egg on the ground on Hollywood Blvd. I've seen adds run on websites for years. If I had all those qualifications I'd be charging a pretty penny. There are people out there who can do it all but very few. Those who can are usually in research institutions.

About the best a business could do in this area is have someone who knows the toolboxes collaborate with someone who understands the psychology and visual language of GUI.

Humorous how out of touch geeks can be.
