Well, since I spent 20 years in the computer industry, many as an OS architect and developer for IBM, I think I have a reasonable grasp of timesharing and related system concepts.

Nowhere in my post did I say anything about one user = one task.

Your comment about Windows and DOS suggests a lack of familiarity with the Windows XP family tree. See perso.wanadoo.fr for the genealogy of the various branches of Windows. See perso.wanadoo.fr for a similar Unix diagram.

Every OS has a history behind it, but software is an infinitely plastic medium whose evolution is driven by many factors. Chief among them (for successful products) is the requirements of its target markets. Given the success of Windows over the years it seems MSFT has done a reasonable job in meeting the requirements of its intended markets.
