Doren: Adding screens on a new iMac

An external VGA monitor can indeed be added to a new iMac (just as it can be on one of the older iMacs). However, it will be in "video mirroring" mode, ie it will show the same thing as the built-in monitor. It will not provide any different screen resolution, either. So all you will get is bigger pixels, rather than more pixels. This can still be nice, as is the case for 1024 x 768 on my CRT iMac, which I find to be eye-straining on its 13.8" viewable monitor. I have therefore attached a 17" CRT to my iMac and upped the resolution to good effect. But it ain't the same as being able to bump the resolution up further from there, which is not possible on an iMac, new or old.

If you want to attach an external monitor and have it be independent of what appears on the built-in monitor, or if you want more pixels than 1024 x 768, then you'll need a Power Mac or PowerBook.

>>I won't be buying an iMac at any price. Too small of a screen. I need screen real estate. I won't be buying anything unless it's really compelling. Like a lot of pros I've got two macs and a PC.<<

Doren -

I'm sure Steve Jobs would be perfectly happy to hear that. The iMac is not a pro machine, and the two G4s you bought are.

Faster G4s will come along, sooner rather than later I'm betting, and then G5s.
