Ok I'll take a stab at this.

What else has changed on your system since Word last worked OK?

If your on Win95 or Win98 quit and kill all other applications running and try to run Word.
You can press <ctrl alt delete> and end all running apps.
Is Word running now?

You could also go to c:\windows\temp and delete all temperary files.

I can't imagine how creating a shortcut to a program could mess up anything but you never know. I wish I had an answer but I don't. Do you have system restore on your machine? If so, it might be worth a shot. The only other suggestion would be to run a full install rather than a repair and if that doesn't work I'd uninstall and reinstall. Might be called the chicken way out but tracing down a generalized error message such as the one you got would be awfully hard.
