Actually the Raiders weren't robbed....the rule is phrased in a way which is inconsistent with the popular notion of what a fumble is. It has nothing to do with intent to throw.....

Here's what the rule says:

Rule 3, Section 21, Article 2: "any intentional forward movement of the arm starts a forward pass, even if the player loses possession of the ball as he is attempting to tuck it back toward his body."

In my view Brady clearly didn't see Woodson coming....and he clearly had started his arm forward.....and he clearly had changed his mind about throwing (before he was hit) and, while his arm was still moving forward, attempted to tuck the ball back toward his body.

Then.....boom! ..... collision with Woodson, ball comes loose. The only question under the way the rule is phrased is whether that hit occurred when Brady was still in the act of "tucking the ball back toward his body" or whether he had finished that act and was proceeding to do something else. It was very close, but I think he was hit as he was finishing that tuck, his arm still moving forward.

I didn't think that was an incomplete pass when I saw it live, but the rule seems to say it is. I thought it was a great game, the only one of the weekend. I love watching football in snow.

There's been a lot of discussion of it on the NFL thread:
